On the Future Loss of a Friend - Anonymous, 2006
My friend told me of his impending death last night.
I wondered if the news was true. Is this right?
Maybe there's a mistake; I don't believe it.
Can this familiar face be soon to fade from my sight?
If only I had tried to spend more time,
Cerished in the present rather than later, from behind.
If only I had told him more that I loved him,
Instead of waiting till the end to compose a rhyme.
Oh, how I wish the past could stretch,
Expand to swallow up this present wretch.
The past with my friend in it seems so dear,
I scoff at what price the future, without, would fetch.
Look ahead, I say to me, what's there?
A life with a void, a hole ripp'd raw where
The shape of my friend was and should still be.
Life with the constant motto, "This is not fair."
But then I think, what's worse, I might forget.
I might let others my need for compainionship surfeit,
And let the place once held by him be filled by them
Oh, it compounds my pain to think on that forgotten regret.
But no, I'll fight and fight to recall,
Remember everything, preserve it all,
Keep him here in my heart even when he's gone,
So that, through life, both with and without him I'll crawl.
